The Memphis Belle

The B-17 used in the movie “The Memphis Belle” came to Roanoke Airport on Labor Day, and we were given a chance to fly in her along with several veterans who actually flew B-17s in World War II.

Galax Old Time Fiddler’s Convention

Every year, in Galax, hundreds — thousands — come to celebrate Old Time and Bluegrass music at the Galax Old Time Fiddler’s Convention. Naturally, we had to go and cover it, so Bob Grebe and I found ourselves there before dawn.

Return of the 611

After $3 million raised by the Virginia Museum of Transportation and years of careful work, mostly by volunteers, the legendary J-Class locomotive 611 returned to Roanoke under her own power on May 30.
